Jewelry Trends 2008: Oscar Necklaces!

Los Angeles—Crimson gowns and showy jewelry ruled the red carpet at the 80th annual Academy Awards last night, firing up an otherwise lackluster fashion parade. The diamond statement necklace showed a tremendous resurgence, with many of Hollywood's leading ladies draping their necks in diamonds and colored stones. Most notable was Nicole Kidman, who absolutely glittered from neck to waist in a rough- and polished-diamond Sautoir necklace by L'Wren Scott showcasing 7,645 diamonds totaling nearly 1,400 carats.Marion Cotillard, Best

Actress winner for La Vie En Rose, chose Chopard's 64-carat champagne-diamond necklace and 106-carat brown-diamond necklace to accentuate one of the most original gowns of the evening: a white-and-gold mermaid-style gown from Jean Paul Gaultier. She also wore Chopard's 15-carat brilliant-cut diamond ring.Keri Russell, also in a light-colored gown, played up its strapless neckline with H. Stern's vintage diamond floral necklace (taken from the private vault of Hans Stern) and dainty diamond floral earrings. And Best Actress nominee Julie Christie sported a custom pink scarab necklace to highlight her knee-length ruched coral-red dress. Crafted by Neil Lane, the necklace is a symbol of long life and has 31 iridescent scarab gems.Jennifer Garner, dressed in Oscar de la Renta, chose multiple jewelry looks: a Van Cleef and Arpels 1928 Art Deco diamond necklace, "Swan Lake" diamond drop earrings, a 1925 Art Deco diamond bracelet and "Clea" diamond ring.Penelope Cruz followed suit, accentuating her dark blue Chanel Haute Couture gown with Chopard's ruby and diamond drop earrings, fancy-shaped diamond bracelet and marquise-cut diamond ring.

Best Actress winner Marion Cotillard in long, layered diamond necklaces by Chopard.Helen Mirren enhanced her red George Chakra gown with sleeves studded in Swarovski crystals with H. Stern's diamond "Hebe" earrings and diamond floral ring, while Jennifer Hudson sparkled in diamond chandelier earrings, diamond bangles and cuff, diamond "Ball" ring and diamond floral hairpins all by Neil Lane.

Jessica Alba took the yellow route, choosing to wear yellow gold and diamond "Creole" hoop earrings by Cartier. She also wore Cartier's diamond shell-motif bracelet and diamond feather-motif bracelet. When it came to Hollywood's leading men, cuff links and watches were the accessories du jour. Johnny Depp opted to wear Neil Lane's gentleman cuff links in rough diamonds and platinum, while Steve Carrell sported both trends in Chopard's L.U.C. watch set in white gold with black alligator strap and white gold "Happy Diamond" cuff links.Patrick Dempsey wore rock crystal, onyx and diamond cuff links by Fred Leighton.

Jewelry Trends 2008: Academy Awards in Style!

The 2008 Academy Awards were presented last night and with few exceptions earrings and bracelets ruled as the celebrities walked the red carpet.

What's New in Earrings:

'Pod' type earrings were shown in abundance, both in 3 and 2 dimensional mode. Literally, think of a seed pod. This dangling earring type was shown with about a 1 inch drop from the post with the 'pod' type dangle hanging downward from the drop.

Celebrity Pod Style:

  • Sarah Larson wore a stunning pair of dangling earrings with a leaf shaped 2 dimensional drop. Mostly covered by her hair, when she tossed her head the earrings peeked out to good effect.

  • Amy Ryan worn a spectacular pair of dangling earrings with a 3 dimensional pod dangle set with diamonds.

  • Kelly Preston also wore this earring style, in gold with a circular dangle.

Door Knob Diamond Earrings:

Hilary Swank's ear piercing was hung with large, door knob type round diamond earrings set in a simple prong setting. Large solitaires in a simple setting is a timeless look that is always appropriate for these types of events. She looked stunning.

Anne Hathaway wore a pair of 2 diamond cushion cut smaller dangle earrings. The first diamond coming from the post was smaller, prong set with an approximately 3 times larger second hanging diamond. Proportionally, the diamonds played off each other and looked very appropriate with Hathaway's hair style and facial shape.

Jessica Alba was sporting her own door knob - that of her diamond solitaire worn on her left hand. She wore a pair of Cartier wide gold hoop earrings in a unexaggerated crescent moon shape. These earrings were quite bohemian/gypsy style.

Hot Pink and Red:

Red was a favorite color for gowns this year. Most celebrities wearing red teamed their garment with diamonds. One notable exception was Heidi Klum who looked fabulous in a red dress, hot pink colored dangling earrings and hand bag with pink lipstick.

Bracelets:

Two types of bracelets dominated. The first was a wide, jeweled, flexible full cuff bracelet that draped around the wrist extending slightly onto the top of the hand. This type of bracelet draws favorable attention to that proportionally small part of the female form.

Bangle karated gold bracelets were also worn - multiple bangles on one wrist.

Jewelry Trends 2008: Golden Globe Style!

Globe trends that struck out

If the Golden Globes had aired, you would have seen these trends, experts say:

Shorter earrings: Shoulder dusters get brushed aside this year for shorter drop earrings and larger cluster-style earrings that lie on the lobe.

Brooches: Pins have popped back into fashion's forefront, especially flower- and starburst-themed brooches.

Colors: Large, smooth gemstones—particularly in pink, blue and green hues—accent colorful gowns that stars are choosing lately. Cocktail rings remain a red-carpet favorite.

Yellow gold: While platinum remains a hands-down favorite at Hollywood's most dressed-up events, risk-taking, fashion-forward celebrities have made the move to rich, yellow gold designs.

Bold pendants: Shorter earrings put the emphasis on the neck, where big, vintage-feeling medallions look just right this season.

Jewelry Color Trends Spring 2008: Gems!

As is the norm for this time of year pastels are all abound!! Luckily for all of us, the gem kingdom has plenty of that to offer and a little something for every budget! Imagine the possibilities. With the versatility of Aquamarine everyone can indulge in the fresh color of March’s birthstone, and can do it with their personal taste in mind. It is a gem considered to be a designer’s favorite because it is so easy to work with. Also keep in mind the affordability of stones like Lemon Quartz and Peridot. These are gems that we can all meet the expense of. Even in pastels, there is a wide variety of color choices too. Look out for lilac Kunzite, green Amethyst, sky-blue Topaz and many others. All of these stones and several others are readily available in fairly large sizes and that leads us to another look that will be all the craze in 2008, immense, chunky jewelry.

Whether it is a charm for a bracelet, pendant on the neckline, or a hefty cocktail ring, big is in! Elegance will not be understated. It is no secret that layering is one way to achieve an ornate and decorative look, but an easier means to that end result is to wear a single vast piece. I like to call these pieces my inspiration pieces too! I often choose one substantial piece of jewelry and build an outfit around it. I have a huge Brazilian Amethyst cocktail ring with loads of intricate gold-work on it, it is a story all its own, but it is the sort of piece that creates direction for an entire outfit. I choose my handbag and shoes according to the jewelry I’ve got on. It is a good thing that the pastel gems of the springtime are also quite affordable so that I can get bigger pieces to pursue this look.

Jewelry Trends 2008: Old Colors Are New Again!

Everything Old is New Again According to Lustre Magazine: "Even though we are well into the first decade of the 21st century, fashion seems to continue to take its cues from the past. The past being the recent past, post-World War II. Despite the dearth of items, a multitude of color directions, and no clean vision on what length a necklace ought to be, there was plenty of new ones and direction to be found in the jewelry stands at this year, shows in Basel Switzerland and Las Vegas."

Blackened metals of every sort, from steel to sterling silver to gold. Oxidized sterling silver, black rhodium-plated gold, black (and even brown) PVD gold, black titanium, and other black or blackened metals allow larger-sized jewelry and silhouettes to remain large yet less ostentatious than high-polished looks. Necklace in 18k brown gold with citrine and brown gems.

Expect to see lots of Texture from hand-hammered to etched. Any kind of texture will dominate precious and base metals.

One of the top raves for the coming seasons is a splash (and more) of black. Black onyx and pearls are hot. Rings with black pearls and pendants decorated with tiny black gems should give you that in look. Why not try some Swarovski black Pearls.

Retro Jewelry, jewelry from the 1940s, is forecasted to be big in 2008. Most retro jewelry was made with inexpensive base metal findings and glass beads. Do some research online by typing in retro jewelry in your browser.

Fall 2007 to winter 2008 will be dominated by rich and vivid saturated colors. Colors and gems like ruby, blue sapphire, and emerald, or use similar colors from Swarovski. Other strong, vivid gemstones, such as tanzanite, and tourmaline should fit right in. Warmercolors, including brown gems and pearls will continue to be popular, just combine them with vivid, saturated color or darkened precious metals.Throw in some dashes of vibrant red, teal, yellow or cosmic blue...purple and coral.

Gray was on the runways this fall, both here and abroad. Grays (from silvery lame looks to deep charcoal) will be around throughout fall and into spring 2008. Gray will be added as a fashion basic like black and white as a fashion basic. Depending upon the hue, gray easily coordinates with any color and metal.

Jewelry Trends 2008: Celebrity Styles in Jewelry!

1. The pendant necklace. Like a charm bracelet, a pendant necklace is the perfect accessory if you’re looking for something to personalize. Take a chain or cord, and add anything that will give the world a glimpse of your personal style. Whether it’s a pretty stone in your favorite color, a teardrop-shaped pearl or an item that means something to you such as your grandmother’s wedding ring, a peace symbol, locket, heart or other lucky talisman, you can thread it on a chain and make it the focal piece of your ensemble. Wear the necklace long if you want to draw the eye down and create the illusion of a longer neck, or shorter if you want to accent your face. Pair the pendant necklace with an open-necked oxford, a simple dress or a vee-neck top. Jennifer Aniston has long been a fan of the pendant necklace, which is a perfect accessory for her boho vibe. For a super modern take, do like Jessica Simpson does and display your pendant on a leather cord rather than a chain.

2. Layered necklaces. After several seasons in the spotlight, the layered necklace look is still going strong. Dare we say the style might even become a classic? It’s certainly interesting, giving the eye a lot to take in, and, because it’s versatile and the combinations are endless, it works well with many different types of necklines. To pull off the look, pair a shorter, 16- or 18-inch necklace with a much longer chain—or three. For added contrast, choose different thicknesses, metals or materials. For instance, pair a pearl pendant and a long, pearl-and-chain rope. So fun because it allows you to wear two or more of your favorite necklaces at once, the layered look is favored by fashion-forward celebs like Maria Menounos and Joy Bryant.

3. Dangle earrings. While I adore diamond or pearl studs for day, dangle earrings are all the rage this season—for both day and night. Cate Blanchett and Rihanna love the style, and who can forget the huge turquoise dangle earrings Marcia Cross wore to the Emmys? Those giant blue babies, by designer Lorraine Schwartz, were the talk of the awards show! That’s because dangle earrings are anything but subtle, adding punch to any hairstyle or outfit. Just make sure you don’t wear other jewelry that will compete. Let the dangles do the talking.

4. Interlocking Hoops. Because bare skin is in this season, it’s okay to forego wearing a necklace once in a while so that your earrings (and sleek, bare neck) can be the focus. Want to be in vogue? The hot earring style right now is the interlocking triple hoop. What it is: three hoops starting at your earlobe that gradually get bigger to form a triple hoop style that’s fun—think hoops—and sophisticated—think dangle. Gold hoops are especially popular right now, as are diamonds, if you can afford them, or CZs, if you’re on a budget. Jessica Alba and Uma Thurman have both been spotted with this sassy style, so you know the triple hoop earring is a trend worth emulating.

5. Oversize hoops. Like the layered chain look, oversize hoops are here to stay. Kate Bosworth, Alicia Keys, Ellen Pompeo and Katherine Heigl are fans of the style, and it’s no wonder: Oversize hoops have an edgy feel that adds a funky, playful, urban vibe to an otherwise staid outfit. No wonder J.Lo and Jessica Alba rock the style so often. To make the style even more exciting, choose big hoops with dangling stones in a springy color, like green aventurine, or sterling silver hoops with peridot drops.

6. Cocktail rings. Cocktail rings pack a surprisingly big punch in a terrific little package! Draw attention to your hands (and look younger) by choosing unfussy rings with one big stone rather than stones with diamonds or other detailing. Choose rings made of bold, colorful materials like turquoise, onyx, mother-of-pearl or jade. Black pearls and oversize white pearls make great cocktail rings too. Trendsetters like Eva Mendes, Jennifer Lopez, Heidi Klum, Cameron Diaz and Catherine Zeta-Jones are all fans.

Jewelry Trends 2008: Valentine's Day Sales Are Stable

Despite the nation's sluggish economy, Valentine's Day jewelry sales were stable for the retailers who spoke with National Jeweler today.

At Westerly Jewelry in Westerly, R.I., owner Kevin Algiere said sales for the holiday were pretty decent considering the economy.

"Sales were bleak in December, and we didn't know what to expect for Valentine's Day, but it turned out OK," he said, citing Journey diamond jewelry and sterling silver as some of his top sellers.

Although sales were down at the retailer compared with last year, Algiere said he has no complaints because they exceeded his expectations.

At Indianapolis-based Reis-Nichols Jewelers, sterling silver jewelry was a hit for the holiday, especially in designs by Scott Kay and David Yurman.

Merchandise Manager Jennifer Demmary said sales were pretty normal compared with past years.

"It was pretty good," she said. "Price points were a little lower than years past."

Rebecca Garnick, marketing director at Long's Jewelers, with five locations in Massachusetts, said Valentine's Day sales were good.

"The consumer that shopped with us was somewhat budget-conscious but also very interested in jewelry," she said, adding that top sellers included brand names in jewelry and watches, as well as items priced $1,000 and under.

At C. Aaron Penaloza Jewelers in San Antonio, Texas, owner Aaron Penaloza said his sales for February have been fabulous, and that it might have been the best Valentine's Day the store has ever had.

Even with gloomy economic forecast, Penaloza said San Antonio's economy is strong and stable.

"I don't know if San Antonio is some oasis of prosperity, but it seems to be weathering this particular economic storm pretty well," he said.

The usual heart and circle designs sold well at C. Aaron Penaloza Jewelers for the holiday, but Penaloza said it's hard to name specific trends since a little bit of everything sold.

Jewelry Trends 2008: Let's Warm It Up !!

Being an election year, red, white and blue will come, once again, to the fashion front—but where red may have taken center-stage in the past—the blues have it for 2008.

Check out Pantone's Spring Color choice: Snorkel Blue

In addition to an earth-friendly turquoise, there's a push towards a very deep navy blue. Accessories in both hues will coordinate well with the other trends in summer and winter, respectively—but avoid going too nautical with the navy—as that's been done within the last couple of years; perhaps a more celestial feel will prevail and intrigue the consumer.

We might be living in the 21st century, but we're still a far cry from flying cars and metallic clothes. Whereas 2007 brought us a slew of accouterments of gold and silver inspired by industrial and mechanical influences—2008 will continue the trend—but warm it up a bit, preferring copper and bronze. Since many jewelry artists started bending readily available copper wire into rings and necklace links, 2008 might be a good time to get back to basics and dress up those early designs.

Jewelry Trends 2008: Tiffany Steps It Up!

Tiffany and Co. is planning at least a 10 percent increase in worldwide net sales for fiscal 2008, the company announced today.

According to Tiffany Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Michael J. Kowalski, the company's U.S. sales for the month of January were modestly improved from December, and Tiffany is seeing ongoing strength in the Asia-Pacific region outside of Japan, as well as in Europe.

"Generally speaking, we are planning our U.S. businesses cautiously for the first half of 2008, while planning for continued healthy international sales growth throughout the year," Kowalski said in a statement.

That plan calls for a high-single-digit percentage increase in U.S. retail sales, reflecting a low-single-digit increase in comparable-store sales and the planned opening of six stores; a mid-teens percentage increase in international retail sales, which reflects a mid-single-digit increase in comparable-store sales and the opening of 15 to 20 stores and boutiques; plus, a mid-single-digit percentage increase in direct marketing sales and a low-single-digit percentage increase in other sales.

Based on these sales assumptions, Tiffany is planning for a mid-single-digit percentage increase in net earnings and a low-double-digit increase in diluted earnings per share. That would increase net earnings to a range of $2.50 to $2.55 per diluted share, compared with the range of $2.25 to $2.28 per diluted share in fiscal 2007 forecasted by the company on Jan. 11 when it reported its holiday sales results.

"We enter the new fiscal year with confidence in our store expansion opportunities, our lineup of new product designs and our ability to enhance consumer awareness through our marketing program," Kowalski said.

One new opportunity in the United States that Tiffany is hoping will draw in both new and old customers is the opening of a Patek Philippe salon—the first stateside—in Tiffany's New York flagship store.

The luxury watch brand and Tiffany have announced they will open the salon in April of this year, bringing to New York a showcase of Patek's current models, as well as an extensive library, individual customer-consultation areas and a studio for on-site repairs, all located within 3,000 square feet on the store's mezzanine.

Unique to the salon will be a collection of traveling museum pieces on loan from the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. The public will have a special opportunity to view these pieces and more at a three-day exhibition to be held in conjunction with the salon opening. Titled "The Values of a Family Watch Company," the exhibition will show some 400 legendary pieces as well as the company's 169-year history. The exhibition will be held from April 24-26 on the fifth floor of the Tiffany flagship store.

Tiffany and Patek Philippe have had a relationship since 1851, when their respective founders, Charles Lewis Tiffany and Antoine Norbert de Patek, made a handshake agreement. Today, four Patek Philippe salons exist within Tiffany stores in Geneva, London, Paris and Shanghai, China. New York will mark the fifth salon between the two companies.

Jewelry Color Trends Spring 2008: Purple!

Purples have always signified romance and royalty.

Well this spring it represents the new high fashion color for vintage jewelry. Lilac purples were dripping all over the ready to wear fashion runways for spring 2008 from Marni to Marc Jacobs.

You don't have to go head to toe dripping in purples like these models! You can update your look from 2007 to 2008 with simple vintage jewelry in all hues and tones of purple. This is one of my favorite hues and it can be worn with elegance!

You can take a cue from the Marc Jacobs run way show where big beads were bouncing everywhere and deck your self out in multiple strands of purple. Popular purple gems are amethyst, spinel, purple sapphire, opalite, and especially charoite for an exciting and eclectic look.

Jewelry Trends 2008: Sexy Gothic Jewelry!

Gothic jewelry, or darkside jewelry, as opposed to 'light,' evokes images of the macabre and the preternatural: vampires, the dead and undead, spirits, black magic and the black arts. As such, artisans craft items that would appeal to a person's dark or gothic side. There is an abundance of e-commerce websites and specialty stores whose emphasis is on jewelry and the darkside. In these places, a person will be able to find gothic jewelry such as pentacle pendants, gothic cross necklaces, spider-and-web piercings, and more.

Also known as pagan jewelry, gothic body ornaments are made from many types of materials, but they are typically available in gold, sterling silver and pewter. They may come plain or be encrusted with jewels. Many pieces of gothic jewelry have their roots in esoteric sources, such as signs and symbols used in ancient Egyptian lore or those employed in Celtic rituals. Other pieces of gothic jewelry are timeless icons representing the eerie: coffin-shaped rings, heavily ornate cross brooches, earrings shaped like the heads of howling wolves.

Slave bracelets, also known as handflowers or maille bracelets, are also popular examples of gothic jewelry. These look like chain mail, or pieces of woven metal. They are different from conventional bracelets in that they are worn not just on the wrist, but on practically the whole hand, and their intricate patterns are sure to attract attention. Bib and choker necklaces are also popular gothic accessories. Catalogues of gothic jewelry oftentimes include so-called 'poison' rings or bracelets. These items have a small compartment where the wearer can presumably keep very small or fine materials, such as powder. Maille, chandelier or dangling earrings are also available to complete one's overall look of mystery.

Gothic jewelry is easy to wear and can be used to dress up or dress down. They are easily available and the variety offered is endless. Because they depict arcane symbols and figures, gothic jewelry imparts a sense of mystery and secrecy. Popular among both the young and not-so-young, gothic jewelry may be dark, but not dreary; ornate, but not tawdry. In fact, it is just the opposite: jewelry and the darkside - a hauntingly beautiful combination.

Jewelry Color Trends Spring 2008: Colors Report

Pantone, Inc., the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries, released the PANTONE Fashion Color Report Spring 2008.

The report features the top 10 colors for women's fashion for spring '08, designer sketches, quotes and headshots. The availability of the PANTONE Fashion Color Report coincides with the beginning of New York Fashion Week.

According to the report, the spring '08 palette is defined by classic, versatile neutrals punctuated by splashes of invigorating brights, empowering consumers to explore new and creative ways to combine colors.

Variations on popular colors such as energizing red, cool, waterborne blue and eco-friendly green also play a key role this season.

"The spring '08 color palette perfectly reflects the cheerfulness of the season," said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. "Stabilizing neutrals combined with pops of brighter colors to create unique, distinctive looks are the basis for a great spring and summer wardrobe."

According to the report, vibrant Snorkel Blue, a favorite this season among designers, is a dependable navy, but with more animation and sophistication. Warm, cheerful Freesia is an uplifting and inviting color to which people are instinctively drawn. It is also a color that allows for diverse accessorizing opportunities in jewelry and shoes. Brighter reds are consistent favorites in spring, and provocative Rococco Red is an exciting, attention-getting classic. The deep pink undertones of flowery Spring Crocus make it among the prettiest, most wearable purples.
